Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme

Wastewater

Why is the project needed?

Uisce Éireann has completed the delivery of the Blanchardstown Regional Drainage Scheme (BRDS). The project represented an investment of approximately €88 million by Uisce Eireann and involved the upgrade of the existing sewer network serving Blanchardstown, Mulhuddart and Castleknock as well as a number of towns in Meath including Dunboyne, Clonee, Ashbourne and Ratoath.

What are the benefits of this project?

  • Expanded the capacity of the wastewater network, which will now facilitate existing and future residential and commercial development
  • Enables long term social and economic development of the greater Blanchardstown region and surrounding areas including Meath
  • Reduced the frequency and volume of untreated wastewater overflows from the wastewater network to the River Tolka, protecting habitats and ecosystems in the River Tolka and Dublin Bay

What was involved?

  • The construction of approximately 3.2km of pipeline installed using trenchless tunnelling techniques alongside the existing wastewater network.
  • The construction of an underground storm water management facility, with a capacity of approximately 30,000m³.
  • The provision of a below ground pumping station with above ground control room (Tolka Valley Park Pumping Station).
  • A control building to house all electrical switchgear, control equipment, an odour control unit, a generator room and ESB sub-station.
  • Local water, wastewater and utility infrastructure diversions to facilitate construction of the stormwater management facility and Tolka Valley Park Pumping Station.
  • The reinstatement of construction areas to match the original condition and associated site works.

Where did the project take place?

The scheme was located alongside the Tolka River Valley in Blanchardstown between Parslickstown and Mill Road. The route was adjacent to the existing 9C wastewater network. The pumping station is located at Waterville Park close to Mill Road.
